COPY EDITOR
PROOFREADER
UK & US ENGLISH

ABOUT ME
I’m Claire, a highly-experienced publishing professional, specialising in proofreading, copy editing and developmental editing (on selected projects). I am very comfortable working in both UK & US English.
I’ve worked in publishing and marketing for over 30 years - for publishers, large public organisations, third sector bodies and—now—for self-publishing authors.
I love words, language and nurturing authors and their stories.
I’m experienced and friendly, but with a real passion for helping authors develop their ideas, concepts, and stories for as wide an audience as possible.
I am selective in my work and only take on those projects with which I feel a true connection and where I believe I can make a real difference.
Whether you’re looking for professional feedback on your draft (manuscript/book/novel), detailed copy editing or proofreading (that final pair of eyes before publication), I can provide conscientious and constructive assistance at any stage of your journey.
I pride myself on my story development and language skills, as well as my attention to detail.
And with each project I bring commitment, diligence and my skills as a true collaborator. When we work together, I commit 100% to your project.

BOOK EDITING SERVICES I PROVIDE
1. DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING
(FOR UK & US ENGLISH LANGUAGE)
Definition: Developmental editing is possibly the most substantive level of book editing.
It involves working with big-picture elements like story structure, logical argument and content planning.
The goal of a good developmental editor is to objectively review and feedback on all those elements with a view to enhance the story in as many ways as possible.

2. COPY EDITING
(FOR UK & US ENGLISH LANGUAGE)
Definition: Copy editing is the correcting phase of editing. It’s where the grammar, spelling, punctuation and general error corrections happen.
A copy editor will:
- do minor rephrasing to simplify sentences and reduce ambiguity
- cut redundancies and repetitions
- make corrections to grammar, punctuation and spelling
- ensure internal consistency (e.g., spelling of characters’ names, consistency in format of writing numbers and dates, capitalisation of headlines)
- ensure compliance with any required style guide
- make margin notes for anything that needs the author’s attention
A copy edit is focused on the mechanics of sentence structure and error correction rather than on the meaning of what is being communicated, though copy editors will query any content issues that look like obvious mistakes.

3. PROOFREADING
(FOR UK & US ENGLISH LANGUAGE)
Definition: Proofreading is the process of carefully reading through text that has already been copy edited.
The aim of proofreading is to catch any superficial errors such as misspelled words, missing punctuation, extra paragraph breaks, and incorrect formatting.
As such, it can be thought of as the quality control phase of editing. This is usually a purely mechanical level of editing – the final methodical check for errors in a manuscript that has already been edited.
